WESTERN HORSEMANSHIP CAMP 2010

Wrangler Week (Limited: by application only)
May 24-29 (3 pm-9 pm)

Training for Wranglers/Counselors

Week 1 - May 31-June 4
(4 pm-9 pm)
 
Week 2 - Adult Camp - June 7-12
(6 pm-9 pm)
Trail ride to local state forest on
Saturday (8 am-5 pm)  
Optional Q&A at 5:30 pm each evening

All camp sessions (Weeks 1-4) welcome beginner to advanced riders, and all campers are invited to compete in the Gymkhana on Saturday, June 26.  There are no Wednesday sessions during any camp week.

Camp sessions emphasize practical, hands-on experience.  Students will ride every day.  In addition, Christian principles will be taught throughout the week during chapels and through horsemanship training.  Working with horses is a wonderful picture of the Lord working in our lives.

The final activities schedule will reflect the needs of pre-registered campers.  Activities draw from the skills listed below.

Camp Activities

  • Videos on specialty skills/safety
  • Care and safety of tack, horse, rider
  • Parts of the horse and tack
  • Gaining respect from your horse
  • Haltering, saddling, bridling
  • Hooves: picking up feet/cleaning
  • Grooming: basics, safety, equipment
  • Mounting/dismounting
  • Basics of sitting the seat in all gaits
  • Basics of leads: identifying/executing
  • Side stepping (if horses are so trained)
  • Emergency dismounts
  • Handling an out-of-control horse
  • Showmanship & judging techniques
  • Trail class
  • Reining
  • Roping
  • Barrel racing
  • Pole bending
  • Problem solving
  • Teamwork
  • Working cattle
  • Trail riding

Dress & Supplies Guidelines

Dress

  • Proper riding boots are mandatory.
  • Riding helmets are required for campers under 18 (available for rental or purchase at camp).
  • Please wear modest jeans & sleeved top. Western attire is encouraged.

Supplies – you may want to bring the following supplies:

  • Insect repellant        
  • Hat
  • Water bottle (Water is always provided.)
  • Sun screen
  • Snacks/lunch          
  • Bible (KJV)

Fees

$300 ($25 discount for registrations completed by April 1st) Fees include camp T-shirt, use of horse and tack, and all instruction. Riders may want to bring their own horses and equipment for more thorough training. Those wishing to board their horse for the week will need to provide their own feed or pay a boarding fee of $40.

Reservations

Send completed reservation form with full payment or $100 deposit ($65 of deposit is refundable if cancelled before May 1st) payable to TW Quarter Circle Ranch Ministries, 213 Bridwell Way, Travelers Rest, SC 29690. Sorry, no credit cards. Reservation is confirmed when full payment and signed waiver are received.

Parents and friends are invited to attend the Gymkhana on Saturday, June 26.  There is no admission fee for non-contestants.  The Gymkhana features horse show/speed events, friendly competition, and the presentation of awards.

About the Instructor

Montana Cowgirl Bev Doherty

Former head wrangler on her dad’s Montana cattle ranch, the TW Quarter Circle. Handled own horse on first cattle drive age three; began breaking and training horses at age 11 under trainer Glenn Montie; received numerous awards in horse shows during high school and college; broke and trained winners in high school and college Nationals and pro rodeo circuit. 4-H clubber and leader for 11 years. B. Sci. from Montana State University in secondary education with a major in physical education; Training and experience in Special Education. 31 yrs. as a Christian school teacher and competitive sports coach.
